It's All About Results!

Result – The consequence of a particular action, operation, or course. To end in a particular way.
Isn’t it interesting how we often take the definition of a word for granted? A colleague of mine recommended I test a theory about Results. One day I planted myself for 2 hours at the exit of a local health club during the busiest time of the day. I witnessed a veritable throng of people entering the club, one after another, bound to perform their particular routine exercise regime for whatever allotted duration and prepared with towels, water bottles, sweatbands, and adorned in the latest fitness garb. I watched patiently as these people went through their daily ritual of exercise be it weight lifting, cardio, swimming, or aerobic class. When it was all over, showered and refreshed, some having stopped off at the juice counter for a blended concoction of carbohydrate something or another, I would politely stop them at the door and ask them two simple questions:
“What Results were you expecting to achieve when you enrolled with the club?”
“What Results have you actually achieved?”
You may be astounded at the responses. Many, if not all of them, stopped to consider my questions and, reflecting on their daily experiences, realized perhaps for the first time, that indeed they have been coming to the club 3, 5, or perhaps 7 days per week for quite a while, in some cases years, and have not really achieved much of what they had originally anticipated. In fact, most would quietly admit that, although they had been regularly active members of the club for several years, they have not actually gained, nor lost much of anything in all that time.
Imagine! Years of regular toil and sweat going by with no significant honestly measured results. How can this be? Why would some one do that?
The truth is, this is sadly more the rule than the exception. And what is more, it is not their fault! In most cases people fail to succeed in these endeavors because they are misinformed. Plainly and simply stated, they have never been empowered to succeed. These individuals have typically been sold the notion that getting into the health club and sweating a bit is the answer to their fitness desires. In most cases, no one has ever explained that 90% of the results they achieve will depend on what they eat and when they eat it. No one has ever told them that in order to lose fat and gain muscle you must stay OFF the treadmill and get INTO the weight room. No one ever explained how to exercise with a properly periodized training program that leverages their individual metabolism and provides measured progressive RESULTS.
In most cases they have simply been trying to do what they read in a magazine, or heard from this person or that, or were (unfortunately) told by an unqualified club trainer to do. They have tried to wade through the quagmire of misinformation that has literally flooded every mode of communication available from magazine to infomercial. They have tried fad diets, quick this, quick that, this pill, that supplement, the 30 day “other thing”. Some may even have tried the little electro-gadget that ‘melts that fat away while you watch TV’! Unfortunately, none of this works, and in the end, these people end up feeling like they have failed.
They have plainly and simply been trying to accomplish their goals using an ineffective and insufficient technology.
